Box Hill is best known for its cultural diversity with its strong specialisation in Asian cuisine and retail. It is a bustling centre with shops, offices, housing, hospitals, education, transport and services.
It is a popular destination for business in Melbourne’s east and includes a bustling central business district with approximately 146,000 square metres of office space.
Recent developments in Box Hill:
In a report commissioned by Council, it was highlighted that ‘Box Hill is firmly established as the pre-eminent growth centre for Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. This growth is spread over housing, jobs, health, education, retail and commercial development’.
Box Hill is a success and could be even better.
Box Hill transport interchange was opened 30 years ago and it is time to make it better.
Council is working with the local community and businesses to build support for an overhaul of the transport interchange.
People travel to Box Hill every day to visit the renowned market and restaurants, to work, to the Box Hill Hospital or Epworth Hospital, to improve their knowledge and skills at Box Hill Institute and Deakin University or just to enjoy the vibrant community.
The feedback that Council has received from residents, public transport users and business is clear. The interchange is hard to use, especially when changing from trams to buses or buses to trains. The bus interchange is old and needs better places to wait. Disability and pram access is poor.
Thirty years after it was built we can do better.
Fixing the transport interchange is the last big step in the renewal of Box Hill. It would capitalise on the significant investment in new residential and commercial development, the redevelopment of the hospital and the improvement of popular leisure facilities and public spaces.
Over the next year we will be talking to the community and working towards a better Box Hill.
Over the next year, further community and stakeholder consultation is planned to work together towards a better Box Hill.
