Think Local Buy Local

Whitehorse City Council’s Think Local Buy Local campaign encourages residents to purchase their goods and services locally.

Supporting local business helps maintain sustainable communities. It provides valuable benefits including:

  • Employment stability and generation
  • Enhanced economic multiplier effect
  • A reduction in carbon footprints
  • Enhanced community spirit.

In 2013, the campaign has predominantly focused on raising awareness of the benefits to the community of purchasing locally.

Think Local Buy Local was launched on 19 October with Support Small Business Day, a Victorian Government initiative to encourage people from across the state to support their local business communities. Businesses and residents could register online to be in the draw for a range of prizes.

The campaign has also been promoted within certain shopping precincts around Whitehorse throughout October.

Think Local Buy Local stickers, were made available to local shop owners. They offer an excellent visual reminder for customers to help support their local traders. Through local media, and centre store promotion, residents have been encouraged to look for the stickers and purchase locally.

Council has also been working with various chambers of commerce, which have assisted Council by communicating with traders to participate in the campaign and connecting with customers through their various community promotions.

Council also hosted a Cash Flow and Profitability seminar that provided education for business owners on how to monitor and maintain profitability, increase cash flow and improve how to manage stock, customers and suppliers.
