Energy Action Plan

The Whitehorse Energy Action Plan 2009–2014 outlines Council’s energy priorities for the next five years that aim to reduce energy consumption and subsequent greenhouse gas emissions. The plan builds on the 2004 Energy Action Plan developed as part of Council’s commitment to the ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability Oceania’s Cities for Climate Protection Program. It reflects one of the key objectives outlined in the Whitehorse Sustainability Strategy 2008–2013, which sets the direction for Council to improve the sustainability of the community, Council and the environment.

Many of the successful programs and projects developed and implemented as part of Council’s original Energy Action Plan 2004 are carried forward to form the basis of the updated action plan. Council will continue the approach of improving the energy conservation of its own work practices as well as engaging with the community to encourage the adoption of sustainable energy-use principles and practices in local households, businesses and community activities. This Energy Action Plan places emphasis on actions that form a local response to energy conservation issues.
