Changes to the Food Act 1984
There have been a number of changes recently to the Victorian Food Act 1984. The main changes are listed below.
From 1 July 2010:
- A food premises classification system in which all businesses and community groups that sell or prepare food for sale will be classified into one of four classes – from class 1 (highest) to class 4 (lowest) according to their food safety risk.
- New provisions on temporary closure of food premises where there is an immediate risk to public health
- A register of Victorian Food Act 1984 convictions.
From 1 March 2011:
- Enforceable undertakings for certain breaches of the Food Act
- Power to issue infringement notices (on the spot fines) for certain offences
- New food sampling requirements
From 1 July 2011:
- Single, mandatory state-wide registration of food vans, market stalls, vending machines, as well as other temporary and mobile premises
- New requirements for private water carters to register under the state-wide scheme.
