Heritage Week 2011: Appreciating Our Past
Council, libraries, local historical groups and the Whitehorse community will come together to celebrate Heritage Week from 8-15 September.
This year’s theme is ‘Appreciating Our Past’ and participants include the Box Hill Historical Society, Burwood History Group, Whitehorse Historical Society, Whitehorse/Manningham Regional Library Corporation and the Louise Multicultural Community Centre.

Let’s Cook – Vietnamese!
When: Thursday 8 September, 10am-12.30pm

Chef at Laksa Me and dux of William Angliss Institute, Venh Cay will share his knowledge of Vietnamese cuisine. Venh – who has more than 12 years’ experience in restaurant cooking – will demonstrate traditional Vietnamese dishes such as prawns and pork spring rolls, crispy chicken ribs and three-colour drinks. Hien Nguyen from the Louise Multicultural Community Centre will highlight the importance of Vietnamese cultural heritage and tradition.
Come On In! Whitehorse Church Tours

Join Whitehorse Historical Society member Valda Arrowsmith on a tour of All Saints Anglican Church. Built in 1888, the original church – now the parish hall – is the only one of its type in the City of Whitehorse remaining on its original site. The building adjoins the current church, which was built in 1964 and has also been noted for its heritage significance.
After a break for lunch, church historian David Lord will discuss the history of Woodhouse Grove Chapel. Built in 1856, it is the oldest surviving church in the municipality. Donations at the church door are welcome.
Young Views of Old Box Hill – Meet the Photographers

Join the talented young photographers who have contributed to Young Views of Old Box Hillat an award ceremony and view images of architecture and monuments together with some wise ‘old’ faces. The exhibition has been organised by the Box Hill Historical Society. Afternoon tea is provided.
Schwerkolt Cottage Open Day

Where: Schwerkolt Cottage and Museum Complex, Deep Creek Road, Mitcham

Enjoy old-fashioned games and activities for young and old at Schwerkolt Cottage, an original pioneer's stone cottage in a garden setting adjoining beautiful Yarran Dheran bushland park. Explore the cottage, orchard machinery shed and museum; view exhibitions by Art in Bark and Melbourne Meccano Club; and watch demonstrations by working-dogs trainer Jack Briscoe, Tip Top Tom’s magic and balloons, Victorian lacemakers from the Australian Lace Guild, Box Hill Handspinners and Weavers, Koonung Wood Turners, Yarra Valley Machinery Preservation Society and blacksmiths.

The Man From Snowy River

The Man From Snowy River is an iconic Australian film based on Banjo Patterson’s famous poem. Starring Kirk Douglas, Sigrid Thornton and Tom Burlinson, the film tells the story of a young man’s love for a woman and his pursuit of a prize colt that has run wild.

Take a tour of the iconic Box Hill Town Hall with its Venue and Hospitality Manager, Roger Murnane. Now a much-used venue and community hub, the town hall once hosted Council meetings in the stately Chambers as well as glamorous debutante balls. Tour the quiet hallways and experience the atmosphere of days gone by.

Hear the stories behind well-known landmarks such as the White Horse and learn about the connection between the Boer War Memorial, Linsley Street and Zante’s Restaurant. Find out which prominent building was once a hotel; stand on the corner where the first tram in the southern hemisphere started on its journey; and recall old shops and cinemas. Please bring a drink, sunscreen and hat and wear comfortable shoes. Hosted by the Box Hill Historical Society.

Join the Women of Substance tour and visit the graves of women from all walks of life that have left enduring legacies in politics, art, business and public life. Hear their stories including artists Joy Hester and Jane Sutherland, and one of Australia’s first female vets, Isabelle Bruce Reid. It is recommended that participants bring along a drink, sunscreen, hat and wear comfortable shoes.

Attend the launch of the book The Whitehorse Landscape: As Seen by the First Settlers by archaeologist and historian Dr Gary Presland. The book explores the landscape, flora and fauna of the Whitehorse area when Europeans first arrived in the 1830s. In her book, When we Think About Melbourne: The Imagination of a City, Jenny Sinclair looks at what makes Melbourne unique by exploring how the interpretation of our city evolves through maps, landmarks, signposts, art, music, literature and film. To mark the 150th anniversary of the naming of Box Hill members of the Box Hill Historical Society have taken snapshots of local landmarks and landscape. These images will be preserved in the collection of the Box Hill Historical Society.
Coming of Age!

In October this year, the Box Hill Community Arts Centre will celebrate its 21st birthday. Visitors during Heritage Week will have a first-hand opportunity to preview the Coming of Age exhibition that documents the birth and important milestones of the much-loved creative hub that is the Box Hill Community Arts Centre.
New Views on Appreciating Our Past
