Supporting teens to enhance emotional intelligence

13 Jul 2017

The next session in Council’s popular Parenting Information Forums is all about supporting teenagers to enhance their emotional intelligence.

Whitehorse Councillor Ben Stennett said the forum on Tuesday 8 August was aimed at parents, grandparents and carers keen to promote healthy emotional intelligence in the teens in their lives.

“This forum will focus on the role of parents and carers in recognising, understanding and responding to young people’s emotions in an accepting and supportive way. An expert in the field will address ways to help children and young people manage their emotions as they grow,” Cr Stennett said.

Speaker Joanie Bartolo from company Emotion Wise supports parents, carers and professionals who work with children. She will share the five steps of emotion coaching, an approach that helps children and young people to understand their emotions, deal with frustration and regulate feelings.

“Emotion Wise states that children with emotional intelligence are more likely to cultivate positive relationships, communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, overcome difficult situations and manage stress,” Cr Stennett said.
