Community members have a great opportunity to thank their local sporting club for a job well done by nominating it for the Whitehorse Sport and Recreation Australia Day Trophy 2018.
Whitehorse Mayor Denise Massoud said sporting clubs made a valuable contribution to the community, offering health and fitness benefits as well as bringing people together in a spirit of celebration and competition.
“This annual trophy is awarded to a sporting club, recreation club or community group in Whitehorse and recognises efforts to create a harmonious community. The trophy is valued by recipients each year as an acknowledgment for their commitment, caring and response to community needs,” Cr Massoud said.
Winning efforts can come in many forms, from fundraising and charity work to giving disadvantaged groups in the community an opportunity to become involved within a sporting club or group.
The 2017 trophy winner was the Eastern Gymnastics Club. The not-for-profit organisation focused on developing its status as an Inclusive Leader Club by providing customised gymnastics programs for members of the community who previously may not have been able to participate, such as those on the autism spectrum.
Nominations this year close at 5pm on Friday 27 October 2017. The winner of the award is announced and presented on Australia Day each year.
