Council’s Whitehorse Sustainability Strategy 2016-2022 (1.41MB) outlines approaches to help Council improve its own sustainability practices as well as encouraging the community to live more sustainably every day.
The strategy contains a wide range of objectives and outcomes to be delivered by different Council departments.
The key outcomes noted in the strategy include:
By implementing this new strategy, Council itself aims to meet some key targets building on the progress made to date. These targets, to be met by 2022, include a 45 per cent reduction in corporate greenhouse gas emissions, a 30 per cent reduction of corporate water consumption and a 65 per cent diversion of kerbside waste from landfill.
The Sustainability Action Plan 2016-2022 outlines initiatives to be implemented during the life of the document including building on current programs that encourage the community’s use of sustainable modes of transport to get to Whitehorse schools, implementing community water conservation education programs on an annual basis and assisting residents to grow healthy trees through education and incentives.
Council will also complete the replacement of all mercury vapour streetlight lamps with energy efficient lamps, fast track the installation of real-time water monitoring systems for Council’s major sporting fields to measure water usage and develop a community sustainability grants program to encourage great grassroots projects and programs in sustainability.
