Using GIS Online
Differences in computer settings and browsers can affect the functionality of Whitehorse Mapping – GIS Online. Factors that may affect the site include (but not limited to) the type (brand) of browser and/or version and any optional settings specified therein.
Browser Information
- Whitehorse Mapping – GIS Online has been designed and tested for optimal operation on Microsoft Internet Explorer, Versions 6 and 7. Council, therefore, recommends the use of this browser and version for optimal use of this site
- Earlier versions of Internet Explorer, as is the case with Version 5, affect the operation of some of the system’s ‘Search’ functions. Browser versions can be identified by selecting the ‘About’ option from the ‘Help’ menu
- Browser settings must accommodate the use of ‘Pop-ups’. Browsers set up to block all pop-ups will inhibit access to the site. Aspects of the ‘Search’, 'Print Template' and 'Help' functions can also be affected by particular pop-up management settings. Generally speaking pop-up settings can be accessed via the ‘Tools’ menu. The user needs to allow all pop-ups from this site, refresh Whitehorse Mapping - GIS online once the pop-ups have been allowed.
- Whitehorse Mapping – GIS Online makes extensive use of scripting to generate content. Browsers set to disable scripting will not be able to access the site. Please ensure that the scripting is enabled. Generally speaking these settings can be accessed via the ‘Security’ section of the ‘Internet Options’ found under the ‘Tools’ menu
- Browser settings must support the display of images. Browsers which prohibit picture display will not be able to display map images and other site content. Please check that the 'Show Pictures' (or similar) option is enabled. Generally, this setting can be accessed via the ‘Advanced’ tab within ‘Internet Options’ found under the ‘Tools’ menu.
Other Requirements
- Whitehorse Mapping – GIS Online is designed to run on screen resolutions of 800 x 600 pixels and higher. A monitor set to a lesser resolution (e.g. 640 x 480 pixels) will cause some toolbar items (e.g. Print Template) not to be displayed
- It is recommended that a broadband internet service is used for this site. Dial-up services will still operate, however may require some patience due to the nature of the content and functionality.
