Walking School Bus

Council’s Walking School Bus program provides a safe, environmentally friendly and healthy method for children to travel to and from school.

More than 350 students in the City of Whitehorse use the Walking School Bus each week to get to and from school. About 70 volunteers supervise children along the various routes.

Each ‘bus’ is made up of at least two trained volunteers – the ‘driver’ and the ‘conductor’ – and up to 35 children. The buses walk along a set route picking up children at convenient designated stops.

The Walking School Bus program encourages healthy exercise habits, strengthens children’s road safety awareness and decreases the impact of cars on the environment. It also increases community connectiveness, with parents and children forming new social networks.

Council coordinates the Walking School Bus program and provides assistance to schools including volunteer training and registration, walking route assessment, marketing and project management.
