Waste Wise

There are many ways that we can all help to reduce the amount of waste produced and sent to landfill. Start by thinking about what you are buying and what you are throwing out.  The key to minimising waste is to avoid it in the first place.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Often we buy products or accept goods that carry excessive packaging which ends up in the bin and being sent to landfill.  Manufacturing products and packaging takes time, money, energy and resources. It also takes energy to dispose of all the waste from these products.

Here are some quick tips to reduce waste:

Reduce

  • Place a ‘No Junk Mail’ sticker on your letterbox
  • Shop locally. You will be helping to reduce the transport and energy costs of those products
  • Buy in bulk and when you buy toys make sure they are durable and will last a long time

Reuse

  • Reuse containers and packaging
  • Give gifts in boxes or bags that may be re-used
  • Say no to plastic bags and take reusable bags when shopping
  • Use your own travel mug for take away coffee

Recycle

  • Use your kerbside recycle bin correctly – know what you can and cannot recycle. Check the stickers under the bin lid for details
  • Use a compost or warm farm for food scraps
  • Donate your clothing, furniture, toys and appliances to a friend, op shop or charity instead of landfill
  • Mobile phones, car batteries, paint and some electrical goods can be recycled. Visit www.recyclingnearyou.com.au for drop off points
