The name might be new, but the high standards are still the same.

5 Star Whitehorse Food Safe Program is the new name for Council’s successful 5 Star Food Safety Assessment System, which has run since 1996. The program also has new branding.

Council uses its program to assess food-related premises. These assessments are conducted against national food safety and hygiene standards and cover food processing, cleanliness and maintenance, personal hygiene and food handling practices, food storage conditions, and documentation and record keeping.

The 5 Star Whitehorse Food Safe Program also provides meaningful and relevant information to food proprietors, consumers and Council about the standard of food safety in Whitehorse.

It minimises and manages risk associated with food safety, acknowledges excellence in food safety and provides incentives business owners.

Businesses that achieve a 5 Star grading through the year are then eligible to receive the annual 'Food Premises of the Year' award in three categories: Class 1 (for example, Aged Care, Child Care, Hospitals), Class 2 (for example Restaurant, Café, Take-Away, Delicatessen, Bakery, Supermarket) and Community Groups (for example school canteens).

Council is proud to announce that from a total of 815 eligible businesses assessed in 2019 in the 5 Star Whitehorse Food Safe Program, the 'Food Premises of the Year' was awarded on 10 February 2020 to:

  • Class 1: Victoria Grange Aged Care in Vermont South
  • Class 2: Zouki Café at Box Hill Hospital
  • Community Groups: Livingstone Primary School in Vermont South
