St James Primary School students recently joined the Vermont Secondary College Eco Club, council's Environmental Education team and volunteers to plant 220 indigenous plants from Bungalook nursery, creating habitat for local wildlife at their Vermont school.

The planting day grew from the school’s participation in the Gardens for Wildlife program, which assesses private gardens and provides plant recommendations to increase backyard habitat for native wildlife. Program participants receive free plants from Bungalook or Greenlink Nurseries.

The collaborative effort taught the young people about the benefits of native gardening and trees, while expanding our urban forest and biodiversity in Whitehorse.
