Celebrate Biodiversity Month This September!

Whether you have a large backyard, a balcony garden or simply enjoy spending time outdoors, there are plenty of ways to support Biodiversity Month this September.

Every action, no matter how small, helps create a better environment for our local wildlife.

Here are some actions you can take this biodiversity month.

  • Grow indigenous plants in your garden or pots. Even a small pot of indigenous plants can provide food and habitat for wildlife, helping to connect habitats across our urban landscape. Visit our local nurseries Greenlink and Bungalook to source plants indigenous to the Whitehorse area.
  • Remove common weeds and replace with indigenous plants. Visit the Weeds page for tips on identifying, removing and replacing weeds.
  • Download iNaturalist to identify local plants and animals in your backyard or neighbourhood, while contributing valuable data to biodiversity research.
  • Start a compost bin or worm farm to turn food scraps and garden materials into nutrient-rich compost for your garden. Whitehorse residents are eligible for discounts of up to 80% off select compost systems. Visit the Composting page to find out more.
  • Join a working bee. If you’re interested in volunteering with a local environment group at your local park or reserve, email enviro.volunteering@whitehorse.vic.gov.au.
  • Be a responsible pet owner by picking up after your dog and keeping cats safely indoors at night. These simple actions help protect local wildlife.
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle. Return eligible bottles, cans and cartons through the Container Deposit Scheme, shop second-hand, or donate unwanted clothing to extend its life or take your soft plastics to Woolworths for recycling.
