After a fire

After a fire you will want to see what has been damaged and what is left, but it is important to wait until the house or building is safe for people to enter. Always follow the instructions and advice provided by fire fighters or other emergency services at all times.

Before you try to re-enter your home:

  • Check with the Fire Officer in Charge that your home is safe to stay in or if you need to leave
  • If you can stay, contact gas, electricity, water and telephone providers about reconnection
  • Contact your insurance company for contents and building insurance advice
  • Notify the landlord if you rent your home
  • Secure your home from further damage by weather, vandalism or theft
