Women in Sport Leadership Program wraps for another year

Fifteen women from local sporting clubs and recreation groups have strengthened their skills and confidence through Whitehorse City Council's 2026 Women in Sport Leadership Program.

Delivered over five sessions, the program provided participants with practical leadership tools, networking opportunities and insights from experienced guest speakers, empowering women to increase their impact within sport and recreation.

Participants explored topics including communication, conflict resolution, leadership styles, self-awareness, and building high-performing teams, while also connecting with other leaders from across the municipality.

The program received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with participants reporting increased confidence, stronger communication skills, and a greater willingness to take on leadership responsibilities within their clubs and recreation groups.

One participant shared that the program helped them "realise that I am actually a leader", while another reflected that they had become "more assertive in my leadership style and apologise less for my opinions".

A key highlight for many participants was the opportunity to connect with other women involved in sport and recreation.

"Understanding that I'm not alone in how I feel," was one comment that captured the value of sharing experiences and learning alongside other women facing similar challenges.

Council's Fair Access Action Plan 2024-2028 outlines its commitment to creating equitable opportunities for women and girls in sport and recreation, including supporting the development of current and emerging women leaders.

By investing in leadership development, the Women in Sport Leadership Program is helping to build stronger, more inclusive sporting clubs and recreation groups across Whitehorse.

Following the success of this year's program, Council looks forward to supporting more women to develop their leadership potential through the 2027 Women in Sport Leadership Program. Keep an eye on Council's website and social media channels for future program announcements.
