Meet the Mayor - Q & A

Whitehorse News - January 2024

Mayor Denise Massoud answers questions about her coffee order, footy team and favourite music!

Tell us about your family:

I have a son and a daughter, both keen basketball coaches in their leisure time, and both have a career focus on the wellbeing of their respective communities. My stepson is a baker so many local residents will have eaten breads he has baked! My husband is an electrician and like many tradies too busy to get things done at home! The most important members of our household are our pets, Bella and Summer.

What’s your favourite thing about Whitehorse?

I especially love the Blackburn Lake Sanctuary as I value and respect the environment. When my son turned one, we celebrated his first birthday there and it was really special. I also enjoyed being a volunteer there and delivering some of the education program sessions a few years ago.

What’s your coffee/tea order?

A half-strength latte.

What’s your favourite snack to keep you going when doing Council work?

Cheese and biscuits -  I am not a sweet tooth at all.

Favourite AFL/Sports Teams

Without any hesitation, the Cats! I was born and bred in Geelong.

Favourite band or artist

Gosh, I like Queen, Andrea Bocelli, John Farnham, Pink, – I don’t like heavy metal!

If you could appoint a celebrity to be a councillor for a day, who would they be and why?

David Attenborough – his wealth of knowledge about flora and fauna is unsurpassed.

What is the number one priority or project that you would like to get done in your mayoral term?

Aside from all of our capital works projects, planning pressures etc, I'd like to see increased opportunities and more inclusion for people with disabilities. Council recently signed-up as a member of the Welcoming Cities initiative and we’re excited to embark on this journey to make Whitehorse an even more diverse, inclusive, and welcoming place for all. I really enjoy Citizenship Ceremonies and hearing the stories about challenges faced and overcome by our new citizens.

What’s going to be your biggest challenge as Mayor this year?

Leading Council through the State Government consultations around the Suburban Rail Loop, North East Link, and the planning reforms leading to “Plan Victoria”. We must try to get the best outcome for our residents.

What is your vision for Whitehorse in 2024 and beyond?

Ensuring we’re sustainable and continuing to provide great facilities and amenities as our population grows. This includes the need for more natural and open spaces. I’m also passionate about economic development and I’d like to see our city grow through development of successful businesses.
