Working for Whitehorse series

Keeping cool at the pool

Thomas Warrick has worked for five years at Aqualink Box Hill as one of the trusty pool lifeguards and has recently moved into the customer service department, working at both Aqualink centres.

“As a bright-eyed seventeen year old in my last year of school, I found myself desperate for an income that was sizeable enough to support my extra-curricular activities yet flexible enough to work around them,” said Thomas.

“Lifeguarding was that!”

Thomas explained that there is a lot more to being a lifeguard than people may realise.

“At Aqualink, we are trained as multi-skilled guards who take on many duties outside of just supervising the pools and applying first aid,” he said.

“This includes setting up all of the various stadium bookings (soccer, volleyball, table tennis), keeping the centre looking good with regular cleaning and also assisting patrons with on-the-fly problem solving.”

Thomas was excited for the opportunity to move into the friendly customer service department and is keen to see where this new role might take him.

"This has helped significantly to further my occupational and interpersonal skills and responsibilities, which in turn could lead to exciting career pathways throughout different areas in Whitehorse,” he said.

“Just another reason why I love working at Aqualink!”

For Thomas, the most rewarding part of his role is building connections and relationships with such a positive and welcoming community.

“Whether it’s the members, managers or employees, you really get out what you put in at Aqualink.”
