Dreaming of a lush green escape right on your balcony? Creating a thriving terrace or balcony garden with potted plants is easier than you think. Gabrielle from Greenlink Nursery shares her simple, practical tips to help you get started and make the most of your space.
Gabrielle’s 8x3m balcony garden features mostly potted shrubs and groundcovers, along with one or two small trees, many sourced from local indigenous nurseries. She uses native potting mix topped with eucy mulch and prefers lightweight recycled plastic pots. These pots are easier to move and give her the flexibility to rearrange the space as her garden evolves.
While balcony and terrace gardens can experience harsher conditions, like stronger winds and temperature extremes, the same core planting principles still apply. By placing plants according to their light needs and preferred microclimates, Gabrielle sets them up to thrive. To make the most of every inch, she groups plants with similar needs together in the same pots. Instead of lining pots only along the edges, she arranges them in gentle curves and creates layers with plants of various heights, creating a more natural feel, and she’s noticed this approach has attracted small birds and even skinks to visit.
To bring her space to life, Gabrielle also incorporates habitat features that support local wildlife. Water sources are tucked among dense foliage for safety, native grasses provide nesting materials, flowering plants attract pollinators, and rocks or logs in sunny spots offer places for creatures to bask.
With thoughtful design, even a small balcony can transform into a lively mini-ecosystem and a beautiful place to unwind and reconnect with nature.
