Safer speeds make room for everyone

Published: Monday 25 Aug 2025

Everyone deserves to feel safe and confident when moving around our local neighbourhoods, whether you're driving, walking to school, riding a bike, pushing a pram, using a mobility aid or cruising on a skateboard. That’s why we’re asking all drivers to travel at safe speeds.

Why safe speeds matter

Speed isn’t just a number on a sign, it’s a key factor in how safe and how welcoming our streets are.

Even small increases in speed can have big consequences. Driving just 5 km/h over the limit doubles the risk of a crash. Slowing down gives drivers more time to notice what’s happening around them and react safely to people crossing the road, riding bikes or simply going about their day.

Safe speeds save lives, and they also make our streets more vibrant and inclusive places.

Voices from our community

Local residents from across Whitehorse have shared their personal reasons for why safe speeds matter to them and their families.

  • Sumeet from Vermont:
“I feel good when I see people out and about during my commutes to work.”
  • Wilson from Burwood East:
“I’m a bit slower now, so when drivers travel at safe speeds, I know they will see me.”
  • A local primary school student:
“I like to walk to school with my brother, so I don’t have to wait for mum or dad.”

These voices reflect the heart of our message. We want everyone who sees or hears these stories to recognise themselves, or someone they care about, and feel encouraged to make safe speeds a part of everyday driving.

How slowing down supports our whole community

Travelling at safe speeds:

  • Reduces the risk and severity of crashes and injuries
  • Makes it easier and safer for people to cross the road
  • Encourages more walking, cycling and active transport
  • Creates friendlier, more connected neighbourhoods
  • Supports children, older adults and people with mobility challenges

The community has seen this first-hand with recent changes around Box Hill Hospital, where safer speed zones and pedestrian-friendly design have made it easier for people to walk, drive and move through the area with more confidence.

We want every street in Whitehorse to feel safe, welcoming and full of life.

Spread the word and show your support

You can help build a safer, stronger Whitehorse by:

  • Driving at safe speeds, especially around schools, shops, and community areas
  • Talking to friends, family and neighbours about why slowing down matters
  • Sharing Safe Speeds posts on social media
  • Reflecting on your own journeys. Who are you keeping safe when you drive responsibly?

Let’s make room for everyone

Safe speeds aren’t just for drivers, they’re for the whole community. When we all slow down, we create streets that are safer, more inclusive, and more enjoyable for everyone.

Keep an eye out for our safe speeds messages in your local area and online, and join us in building a community that puts people first.

Drive at safe speeds. Share the message. Make a difference.
