This year has seen an increase in recorded influenza cases across Australia. Colds and flu are more common in winter when people spend more time indoors with each other, increasing the chances of infection.
Simple steps can help stop the spread of illnesses:
- Handwashing: wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol.
- Cover Coughs and Sneezes: cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow.
- Avoid Touching Your Face: keep hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth where possible.
- Surface Cleaning: clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces to kill any lingering germs.
- Avoid Crowds where possible during flu season, be mindful when in large gatherings or taking public transport.
- Stay Home When Sick: if you have flu symptoms, stay home to prevent spreading the illness to others.
- Healthy Lifestyle: a balanced diet, sleep, and stress management can help boost your immune system and make it more resilient to infection.
- Flu Vaccination: it’s not too late! Council provides free flu vaccinations for children aged 6 months to under 5 years and those with medical conditions. Adults can book with your local GP.
Some Victorians may be eligible for free immunisations.
