Tips to make the most of your solar panels

Nearly 19 per cent of Whitehorse dwellings have solar PV systems compared to the Victorian average of 26 per cent.  As these installations increase, here are some tips to help you make the most of your solar PV:

  • Maximise your electricity use when the sun is shining on the panels. It is better to use the electricity generated, than feeding it back to the grid. The most popular orientation, north-facing panels are generating from about 10am to 4pm during the year and longer during summer when the sun is out longer. East-facing panels are for morning energy generation and west-facing are great for afternoon generation.  Have a look at the numbers on your inverter to see when it is producing the most electricity. Bigger the number the better!
  • If your appliances have timers - set them for day-time use - for example dishwashers, washing machines and hot water heat pumps. If you have insulation, pre-cool (or heat) your house with the air conditioner.
  • Maximise electricity use generated from your solar - If you have to iron your clothes or vacuum the floors, do it during this time. If you use your oven a lot, cooking during the day can also maximise solar energy usage.
  • Maximise the use of your solar panels longer term, by installing more electrical appliances in your home - hot water heat pump, reverse cycle air conditioning and induction stovetops. Why use gas when you have "free" electricity?
  • Keep the panels working to their maximum efficiency by having regular service inspections (and cleaned) every few years by a qualified solar panel electrician to spot any faults to optimise energy output.
