It’s been a joy to participate in many Council and community events recently. A standout was opening the Annemieke Mein OAM exhibition at Box Hill Town Hall. Annemieke grew up in Heatherdale Road, Mitcham, and is an internationally celebrated textile artist creating works inspired by nature. ![]() I also opened Council’s Men’s Health Week, Ageing Well seminar, and mid-year Whitehorse Arts Association exhibition. I’ve spoken at community groups including Tunstall Probus, LinC, Box Hill Prostate Cancer Support Group and on Radio Eastern 98.1FM. I always welcome your thoughts, suggestions, and questions – please don’t hesitate to contact me. |

Trees are highly valued in Lake Ward. Residents have contacted me about tree pruning around powerlines. Council prunes to comply with State Regulator clearance requirements and can be fined for non-compliance. We recognise this harsh pruning negatively impacts the look of a treed streetscape and contributes to short-term canopy loss and sometimes tree life expectancy. The regulations are being reviewed and Council has advocated to the relevant Minister for uninsulated low voltage wires in low bushfire risk areas to have a 30cm clearance (instead of the current 1m clearance requirement, plus additional clearance pruning to allow for regrowth). |

Whitehorse has many free events for our community. On the second Saturday of each month the HealthAbility host a FREE repair café the same day where volunteers can repair clothes, furniture, toys and bicycles. Small donations are appreciated. On the second Sunday of each month try the Whitehorse Farmers market for some great produce. Lastly for business owners and networking, look up the Whitehorse Business Group networking event held once a month. Enjoy! |

Open Space in Whitehorse is highly valued by the Box Hill and Box Hill South community. It's used for recreation, leisure, environmental and cultural benefits and visual amenity. By 2056, Box Hill's population is expected to more than double. By 2041, the Box Hill Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) Structure Plan area is forecast to grow from 13,300 to 29,100 due to the expected increase in multi-storey residential buildings. Council is preparing a detailed response to the Advisory Committee, and I am pushing for more open space in Sparks Ward, particularly in proximity to the Box Hill Activity Centre. I was privileged to attend the book launch of 'How Benny Gets His Buzz Back' by author Helen L Walker. The book deals with mental health issues and is aimed at children. It highlights how talking over problems with sympathetic people and a great support network helps Benny gets his 'buzz back', providing a great example for children facing similar challenges to follow. To learn more or for copies of the book, contact author Helen Walker on 0409 241 075. ![]() The 2025/2026 Council Budget has been passed by council last month. In the coming months Council will begin to frame the 2026/2027 Budget and I would dearly love to support Sparks Ward (Box Hill and Box Hill South) residents, clubs, groups and associations in putting forward capital works and other programmes. Please email me with your ideas. I will be advocating for a new community hub in Box Hill that will include a new Chinese Cultural and Community Centre and Museum, a new home for the Box Hill Ballet Association, resurfacing of the Box Hill Athletics Track in Elgar Road, a new Table Tennis Council Facility and new pavilions at Surrey Park and Sparks Reserve. |

There has been a lot happening across Council. With the passing of our first budget, I can confirm a number of improvements – here are a few ward highlights. In addition to improved lighting which is nearing completion, a circular track will be installed at Terrara Park providing year-round amenity for all ages and a sturdy platform for walkers and pooches alike throughout soggy winters. This will ensure the park remains a favourite spot for our community for casual and active recreation. Pleasingly Morack Golf will also receive ground irrigation works with additional course |

It’s always a pleasure to join Whitehorse’s annual Tree Planting Day. Local residents and groups planted thousands of trees, shrubs, and grasses to support wildlife. Congratulations to the newly formed Mega Mile Traders Association! Cr Weller and I have followed this closely. A recent milestone was the election of a committee and creation of a strategic plan to help keep the area vibrant and competitive. In response to changes at Britannia Mall, including Coles’ closure, Council has temporarily changed 1-hour access road parking to 3 hours. Existing 15-minute, accessible, and taxi parking remains unchanged. 0448 375 937 |
