Founded in 1952, it is the oldest active Hispanic community organisation in Victoria. The
Society organises regular events, celebrations and festivities that attract audiences from near and afar. As part of this, monthly tertulias (“cultural gatherings”), each with their own
particular theme, highlight countries from all over the Spanish-speaking world and members
and visitors to the Box Hill Community Arts Centre are invited to celebrate and saviour the full
breadth of Hispanic culture – including Latin American food and culinary traditions. Latin
music flows from the stage, dances are performed. Spectators are seduced and welcomed to participate, as they connect with Spain and Latin America in events that promote the Spanish language with all its charming idiosyncrasies and where there are raffles and quizzes and prizes and vibrant stories that take us to exotic places.
The Hispanic Society of Victoria was first created by a group of Victorian scholars, translators, and enthusiasts “of everything Hispanic!”. Run by volunteers, it is a non-profit organisation that promotes the study of the Spanish language, literature, and other disciplines conducive to the better understanding of the Spanish and Latin American cultures to all Victorians.
